Chinese Drywall
|
Nobody knows exactly how much Chinese drywall was imported into the United States since 2004. Imports rose drastically as the Gulf Coast states began rebuilding after hurricane Katrina. It is currently estimated that between 50,000 and 100,000 new homes built since 2004 were constructed using Chinese Drywall. The majority of these homes are believed to have been built in Texas, Louisiana and Florida although it has been found in homes across the nation. The problem with drywall manufactured in China is the high sulfur content. Normally drywall does not smell or emit sulfur gases. Drywall manufactured in China may emit carbon disulfide and carbonyl sulfide, compounds known to cause sinus problems, respiratory damage, headaches and nausea among others. In addition, Chinese drywall emissions are known to cause major damage to electrical, mechanical and electronic systems in your home. Many times the only solution is to replace all the drywall in the residence.
